Healthy Skin for Flawless Foundation

Table of Contents

It’s challenging to find a face foundation that doesn’t settle in after a few hours and end up highlighting your dry skin, wrinkles, large pores or acne sores. Even after using moisturizer, primer and carefully layering, you can encounter the same issues. The problem may not be your foundation makeup—it may be your skin. The cold, dry fall weather exacerbates the sun damage and hard water or chlorine damage from the summer months. Healthy skin is the best foundation for flawless makeup. Read below for spa tips to give you flawless foundation this fall.

Exfoliate to Remove Superficial Damage

You can remove the top dead layer of skin with gentle exfoliation at home. Look for products with glycolic acid, salicylic acid or lactic acid to gently and naturally slough off dead skin. Pharmaceutical grade products have a higher concentration of active ingredients. See a licensed dermatologist for an assessment beforehand, as he or she will determine a safe product for your skin type.

At home care can take several weeks to see any noticeable improvement. We recommend a spa chemical peel followed by a home exfoliation regime for best results. Chemical peels help reduce pores, stimulate collagen for anti-aging and remove flaws caused by sun damage. They range from moderate, with little or no downtime, to medium, or more aggressive with some downtime.

Once you’ve removed dead skin cells, you will see a noticeable difference in your foundation makeup.

Moisturizer for Healthy Skin

After exfoliation, it’s crucial that you follow up with a good quality moisturizer. Studies show that products containing L Ascorbic Acid , or vitamin C, applied topically, help repair the skin after sun damage. For daytime, use moisturizer with an SPF 30. Apply your moisturizer before your foundation and wait five minutes for it to settle in.

Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xanin) to Smoothen Wrinkles

As you age, your skin loses elasticity. Elasticity is your skin’s ability to smoothen out after it’s been crinkled. Think of elasticity like a rubber band, which cracks and dries out from age and frequent use.

Neuromodulators (most commonly called Botox, even though there are several specific brands of botulism toxins) are facial injections that cause the superficial muscles just under your skin to relax. When you smile, frown or laugh your skin won’t wrinkle as deeply. Over time, the superficial wrinkles on your face lessen or even disappear, which helps your makeup foundation to go on smoothly and flawlessly.

Medical Makeup Face Foundation

When most people think of medical makeup foundation, they think thick, pancake makeup. Nobody wants to look like Swedish vlogger Josefin Lillakas after applying 100 layers of foundation!

We at PAW agree that medical makeup foundation, in the past, was heavy and unnatural looking, but with the advances in the beauty industry in the last few years, it’s time to start some positive PR for medical face foundation. Anyone can use it, even if you don’t need the extra coverage it provides. Not every brand works for everyone, but several products on the market offer full, natural looking with anti-aging and healing properties that stimulate collagen growth, contain SPF to protect your skin and have soothing ingredients that can heal sunburns or acne lesions. Lauren Oryall , Office Coordinator for PAW, says, “Some of our patients are surprised to hear that I wear Oxygenetix everyday, since it is marketed as a post procedure foundation. Oxygenetix gives me a natural, finished look without putting anything heavy on my face. The added SPF just saves me a step when I’m in a hurry.” Check out Lauren’s before and after picture at the beginning of the blog!
