Getting Rid of Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

Spider veins and varicose veins are like distant relatives that show up out of nowhere and insist on staying. You wonder how they found you, why they didn’t announce their arrival and how to get rid of them quickly, without making a big scene. We want to share the many different, non-surgical ways of getting rid of spider veins and varicose veins and let you decide which is best for your budget and goals.

The Natural Way to Treat Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

Spider veins and varicose veins are caused by a number of factors (more often in women) including heredity, hormones, obesity, previous surgeries or injuries to the skin. The most common cause is lack of adequate blood flow to an area, which happens if you stand or exercise on your feet for prolonged periods of time.

If you have spider or varicose veins, your doctor will recommend you wear compression garments or support hose to encourage blood flow to the area. Varicose veins can become very painful, itchy and swollen. Compression garments also help alleviate these symptoms as well.

Exercise encourages blood flow throughout the body. Regular aerobic activity, including walking, can help eliminate varicose veins. However, activities like running or jumping can cause spider veins so be sure to wear clothing that compresses your legs and breathes well.

Oral supplements have been shown in some studies to be an effective preventative therapy for varicose veins, as they increase blood flow to the entire body. Look for ingredients like: Aesculus hippocastanum, Ruscus aculeatus, Centella asiatica, Hamamelis virginiana, and bioflavonoids.

Sclerotherapy for Treating Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

Sclerotherapy vein injections involve an injection of a saline solution or sclerosing agent directly into the spider or varicose vein, causing it to collapse. Surrounding healthy veins pick up the blood flow once the vein is destroyed. The procedure takes 15-60 minutes and can be done on an outpatient basis. A board certified physician should always administer sclerotherapy, as, like any procedure, it’s not without risk.

For a few days after undergoing Sclerotherapy, patients wear compression garments and avoid: direct sun, hot baths and aerobic exercise. Most people see a little redness or swelling and experience mild itchiness for 48 hours after the procedure. The injected spider veins disappear within a month and for varicose veins, within 3-4 months.

Some insurance carriers cover sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins if certain conditions, like pain or severe swelling are present, so please ask about this at your complimentary consultation.

Dr. Botros will refer you to a larger vein center if she thinks your insurance may cover the procedure. However, a vein center will normally treat the largest varicose vein, expecting that the smaller surrounding veins will resolve as a result. Often, when smaller veins arise, a vein center won’t treat them, as those are considered cosmetic procedures. That’s where a physician owned and operated medical spa, like PAW, can continue your sclerotherapy treatments until all of your varicose veins or spider veins have been addressed.

Cost of Sclerotherapy

The cost of sclerotherapy is $400 for one half hour procedure, but for small patches this may be less. Patients often need three or more treatments, scheduled one to two weeks apart, as veins can arise periodically. The amount here is approximate, but you can find out more with your complimentary consultation.

Spider veins and varicose veins are unsightly, frustrating and in the case of the latter, painful or uncomfortable. The good news: you have very effective nonsurgical options for getting rid of these veins. If you’re seeing some spider veins or varicose veins on the surface of your skin, come see Dr. Botros for a complimentary consultation. With a little guidance from a medical doctor today, you might be able to prevent the problem from becoming worse later.

Is Botox Becoming Blasé?

Before and After Botox patient
Our patient, Misty, isn’t shy about her wrinkle injections and why should she be? She looks beautiful and natural!

Denying that you’ve never had Botox injections is like insisting you don’t have on an ounce of makeup or have never dyed your hair. Who can forget Kylie Jenner’s vehement disavowal of lip fillers and the Internet’s hilarious, mocking response with the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge? In this age of people as young as 20 undergoing wrinkle injections, it’s no secret that nearly everyone, not just celebrities, is doing it. With all the TMI being posted daily on social media, it’s apparent we are living in an age of transparency (no pun intended.) At PAW we take a practical, honest approach to beauty, openly informing patients about which services we’ve tried and helping them set beauty budgets in accordance with their goals.

How many people are getting Botox?*

Neuromodulator injections like Botox or Dysport are up by 1% over 2014, with over 6.7 million people undergoing injections in 2015. Fillers are significantly gaining in popularity, especially among people aged 20-29 (thanks Kylie!)

Popular Opinion and Botox

A quick search on YouTube for “Before and After Botox” yields about 95,500 results as of October 2016. All of these women are openly filming themselves getting neuromodulators. The top video, from YouTuber Janet D’Olivera, shows her results each day after getting her injection (see below.)

What’s the most telling about the video isn’t just the video itself—it’s the comments! Most people were worried about injections and are thinking of trying them after Janet’s video, thanking her for being open about her procedure.

Good on you… I’ll be trying it for the first time soon myself. Whatever makes us happy right. It’s not hurting anyone. You look amazing.

You look so incredible!!!! The difference is amazing!! Congrats on getting it done. Who cares what anyone else thinks!! You do you and enjoy that smooth baby bum forehead!!!

Hi there Janet. Thank you for your videos . So funny but very informant at the same time. I’m seriously considering getting my elevens done, just waiting for the consultant to contact me. This will be my very first time ever so just wanted to say thanks for all your info and experiences. xx P

Another video, posted July 2015 by Melissa Autry, BOTOX Before and After Pictures!! Let’s Tell The Truth People! has a frank, honest description written by Autry:

I am trying to be up close and personal with you all! Please dont judge and I am by no means saying its for everyone. But I also dont want you to think that “some cream” can give you these drastic results. PLEASE THUMBS UP FOR BEING BRAVE ENOUGH TO TALK ABOUT THIS FOR EVERYONE TO SEE! love you and I always want to be honest with you. Xoxoxo

If you get a chance, read the supportive comments to see how most people are not only planning on getting injections, but have already undergone the procedure and are open about it.

Getting Injections and Setting a Budget

In the spirit of transparency, we can tell you that a man or woman over 50 who is just beginning to take care of his or her skin will have to spend a lot more to get their skin healthy than if they had started preventive care early on. Our Plaza Premium helps you set a monthly beauty budget based on your goals to help you space out your payments and treatments throughout the year. Check back into this blog for specific articles about how much Botox injections cost according to your age range and how much Botox you would need based on the severity of wrinkling. The cost of Botox depends on how much you need and how much you need depends on how deep your wrinkles are. Come in for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Botros to get a specific price for your skin.

Brotox Before the Big Day: Why More Men are Getting Wrinkle Injections

Wrinkle relief isn’t just for women anymore. As the average age for grooms rises across the United States, these men, well into their 30’s or early 40’s, desire to look their best before the big day just as much as their partners. The stigma surrounding brotox, or neuromodulator injections for males, is decreasing as men take more care about their appearance and seek out wrinkle injections, among other treatments, to stay youthful looking.

In Kansas and Missouri, the average age for a male to get married is around 27 years old. Compare that to the average age of male same sex couples and that age rises to about 41 years old. According to an article in the New York Times, “Till Wrinkles Do Us Part,” both heterosexual and homosexual males are increasingly seeking out medical spa services, not just for brotox, but for other services such as laser sculpting and laser hair removal.

Brotox and Staying in the Dating App Game

tinder logo

With the growing popularity of dating apps like Tinder and Ok Cupid, users base their initial choice of mates on appearance alone. While the demographics of swiping apps for dating are mostly in the millennial, or 25-34 year old age bracket, a significant number of older adults are gravitate towards these apps as well. If an older male or female is attempting to attract the most swipes on these apps, it stands to reason that there is pressure to compete aesthetically with a younger crowd. Maintaining a youthful appearance is equally critical older for males and females. Dating apps could be equalizing the dating field, where affluent older men or women don’t have the edge they might have had if everything depends on a split second glance at your appearance alone.

The Male Lifestyle Trend

Michael Douglas Ages in Reverse!

Brotox is not a new thing for males in entertainment, as many male celebrities seem to be getting younger over time. Even if your profession doesn’t put you in the public eye, there is nothing worse than being shown up by a younger looking spouse. One female patient’s husband came to PAW for brotox after having someone ask his wife if he was her father!

As females up their game, males are being challenged as well, especially as many new lifestyle brands emerge in fashion, beauty and fitness to capitalize on this trend. Men still wear sweat pants, but only if they are tailored, made of pima cotton and are paired with leather sneakers.

ULAH Kansas City

Wrinkle relief isn’t just for women anymore. As the average age for grooms rises across the United States, these men, well into their 30’s or early 40’s, desire to look their best before the big day just as much as their partners. The stigma surrounding brotox, or neuromodulator injections for males, is decreasing as men take more care about their appearance and seek out wrinkle injections, among other treatments, to stay youthful looking.

Capitalizing on this trend are Kansas City couple Buck Wimberly and Joey Mendez, who are launching an amazing men’s lifestyle and apparel store in Kansas City called Ulah (pronounced YOO-lah) October 20th at the brand new Woodside Village. They offer fashion forward men’s clothing, accessories, gifts, cards and even outdoor equipment curated for the discerning male customer. Wimberly states, “More than ever, men are feeling they have the permission to take better care of their appearance, health, and over all well being. We’re seeing this trend in fashion apparel and accessories, but also in the lifestyle realm – like skin care, fragrance, grooming, and active wear. Men are focusing more on achieving a balanced life, and that’s why our store’s assortment and experience are designed to serve more parts of their lives.”

Ulah will be having a Grand Opening October 20, from 6-9pm in their new store, at 4907 Rainbow Blvd., Westwood KS 66205. Be sure to check it out!

We at PAW are excited to offer men’s only Brotox parties, which we like to call “Bourbon and Brotox.”whiskey1We serve cocktails, appetizers and can take care of everyone in your party of 8-10 for a discounted rate! If you are getting married soon, book a party for you and all of the groomsmen. Please visit our Private Parties Page for more info!

Try Yoga to Lengthen your Life

At PAW, we believe in health from the inside out, in that order. If inside you feel like you’re a hundred years old, and outside you look it, it’s time to take a proactive approach. First educate yourself as to what stress does to your body and skin and then find out what to do about it. If you can’t do anything in the near future about removing the stressors in your life, then try our suggestions below, including yoga, to lengthen your life and help you look and feel younger.

Free Radicals, Antioxidants and Oxidation

Words like free radicals and antioxidants are part of our common language. Most people think that free radicals float about freely in pollution, cigarette smoke or chemical laden food. Antioxidants, in popular opinion, are in the healthy foods that we eat, like blueberries or acai or in higher quality skin care products. We absorb them into our bodies to kill the free radicals that we exposed ourselves to, making us less likely to get cancer. This is not true, or we could simultaneously smoke a cigarette and eat a pomegranate and basically break even. Free radicals aren’t even free, really. We make them inside our bodies by a cellular process called oxidation.

Oxidation is the process your cells undergo to use up bad air or food and try to make something good, like energy, or when your body is fighting a virus. Anytime your cells undergo oxidation, it’s hard work. When the work is done, you are left with free radicals, or leftover bad molecules in your body. This isn’t a terrible thing, necessarily—because usually your body can quickly repair any damage the free radicals do and heal itself, thereby getting stronger—unless you have a build up of too many free radicals and they start to wreak havoc, like tornadoes ripping through a Kansas prairie. This is called oxidative stress.

Oxidative Stress + Life Stress = Rapid Aging

Your lifestyle might literally be killing you. Recent studies show that constant stress shortens your life by ten years! When you stress out, the first place it shows is in your face. Loss of sleep, too much caffeine, alcohol and sugar and constantly furrowing of your worried eyebrows can add years to your face overnight in the form of sallow skin, acne breakouts, fine lines and wrinkles.

Oxidative stress, according to a study done in 2010, might not be solely to blame for aging in the human body, but might determine if you age in a healthy way, or an unhealthy way, in other words, your quality of life. Given that it’s a normal cellular process, you really have no cause for alarm, unless you add regular, chronic, life stress into the mix. Then you start to feel and look about one hundred years old.

Signs of Oxidative Stress + Stress

How do you know that all of this turmoil is going on inside of you? Look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Self, how do you feel?” If a wrinkled face with gray hair answers back, “I’m glad you asked, whoever you are. I’m exhausted, my body hurts, my head hurts and my eyes hurt,” then you are really oxidative-stressed out. At this point you should try out our suggestion below.

Why Yoga and not Just Exercise in General?

Yes, yoga is relaxing and relieves stress. Exercise is good for stress, too. A study done in 2005 addressed how psychological stress increases oxidative stress. The volunteer test subjects were put through a lovely-sounding, ten-day yoga program and the results found that yoga, by decreasing psychological stress, reduced oxidative stress as well. But does yoga or exercise do anything for oxidative stress?

In a 2014 study done on the Effect of Yoga on Oxidative Stress, researchers found that yoga, when practiced by elderly males, significantly reduced hypertension (caused by oxidative stress) when practiced for three months, as compared to no significant decrease in a group that walked instead.

In a clinical trial done on a large group of adults with type 2 diabetes in India, researchers concluded that a three months yoga regime reduced their oxidative stress levels significantly by lowering their blood glucose levels.

Yoga is exercise that reduces life stress and oxidative stress, so you get more out of your time by not only lengthening your life, but improving the quality of your life as well. You can combine a yoga program with a healthy, sugar and chemical free diet and skin care products containing vitamin C and other antioxidants, like our  Vivier ™Anti-Aging Kit.

At PAW, we believe in whole life and body health. Start from the inside and work your way out. Nothing is better for a more youthful appearance than a healthy lifestyle and less stress! If you’re stressing out, whether from life or are in oxidative stress, then look in the mirror, have that conversation and go to yoga!

Show Off those Gel Nails by Giving your Hands a Makeover!

Image from Sciton. Before and After of hands after treatment with photo rejuvenation BBL laser.
Image from Sciton. Before and After of hands after treatment with photo rejuvenation BBL laser.

If you count the rings on a tree, you can estimate how old the tree really is. The same thing is true with your hands, in the sense that this area of the body really betrays your age to the entire world. Until proper gloves come back into fashion year round, you, like all of us, will keep spending a small fortune every year on manicures. But what does it matter if your nails are fresh and youthful if your hands are aging? If you want to rewind the clock, don’t neglect your hands. Youthful looking hands are essential in showcasing a beautiful manicure. Show off those gel nails by giving your hands a makeover.

Every Season Takes a Toll on Your Hands

Not many people remember to put sunscreen on their hands during the hot summer months. Putting sunscreen in your hands to apply to your body doesn’t count, unless you tend to walk around with your palms facing heavenward. After spending a day outside bike riding, gardening or lounging by the pool, your hands take the brunt of the damage. Your skin, even the skin on your hands, loses elasticity from the natural aging process. After years of harsh sun exposure, you’ll start to develop telltale signs on aging on your hands, like wrinkles, freckles and sunspots.

If the fall, the weather turns cool, crisp and dry. This can make your hands itchy, cracked and calloused. Combine this with moisture from hand washing or rain and they become chapped easily. Winter is fall, times ten when you factor in the snow. By spring your hands are so beat up that you wonder if your snow mittens would look cute with a floral skirt.

Reverse the Aging Process on Your Hands

One remedy is, of course, to put sunscreen on your hands and use tons of moisturizer. But sometimes even if you do everything right you think you just can’t stop the natural aging process. If you can reverse time by using medical spa products and services on your face, then it makes sense that you can do the same for your hands. Why not? Using a multi-tiered approach, just like you would for your face, you can reverse the aging process on your hands.

Skin Care Products for Youthful Hands

When dealing with sun damage and wrinkles, vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and hyaluronic acid are key in reducing fine lines and maintaining healthy skin. The same products you apply to your face you can also apply to your hands, in the morning and before bed.

Tip #1: You don’t have to use another complete application, either. After applying your products to your face with your fingertips, swipe the top of each hand with the residue or use a miniscule pump to cover both hands.

Tip #2: Wear spa gloves on your hands while you sleep at night to really hydrate the skin and prevent the product from wiping off.

Tip #3: In the morning, apply your moisturizer with SPF to hands using the same method as Tip #1.

Dermal Fillers for Hand Wrinkles

At PAW, we like to remind our patients that they can use dermal fillers for their hands. A small amount of filler smoothens wrinkles on your hands, making them appear supple and more youthful. The filler can last four months to two years depending on treatment area and history of treatments.

BBL, or Phototherapy and Laser Resurfacing to Reverse Signs of Aging in Your Hands

The BBL, or phototherapy laser is an excellent treatment option for eliminating sunspots and damage done to the skin by harmful UV and UVB rays. You see results a few weeks after treatment.

Laser Resurfacing is a more aggressive option if you not only want to reduce sun damage but also eliminate wrinkles quickly and effectively.

Our hands are really the most used and abused part of our bodies. Read this great article on hand care from hand model Ellen Sirot to get more information about taking care of your hands. As Sirot succinctly puts it, “Your hands are a microcosm of the rest of you. Hands that feel dry and are dehydrated hurt people. You look at your hands 99 percent of the day. When it’s reflected back at you, a hand that doesn’t look good is constant negative reinforcement. Hands tell so much about you. We really are trained about how to take care of our faces, but people don’t talk about our hands.”

Protein Shakes Can Make You Gain Weight

It’s easy to use the terms “protein shake” and “diet shake” interchangeably, but the truth is, these products are different. Protein shakes are used primarily for muscle building before or after a workout. Diet shakes are used as a meal or snack replacement as part of a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) or a Low Calorie Diet (LCD) for weight loss. Often our patients will buy a protein shake powder at their local health food store, drink one or two shakes a day and wonder why they’ve suddenly started gaining, instead of losing weight. Let’s examine why protein shakes aren’t always a good option for weight loss.

Different Kinds of Proteins in Protein Shakes

Protein shakes use many different sources of proteins, but the two most common are whey protein and casein protein. Whey protein is generally derived from the by-product of cheese production, while casein protein comes from cow’s milk.

Body builders tend to favor whey protein, as it is a rapid acting energy source that helps them to pack on muscle, or bulk up. If you consume these shakes with no changes to your diet and cannot exercise for hours a day, you will definitely gain weight by drinking them.

Casein is a long acting protein. It stimulates the metabolism for up to six hours instead of rapidly releasing energy and does help you feel full longer. This is a better option if your goal is weight loss. If you are lactose intolerant or vegan, look for plant based proteins like hemp, chia or pea isolate.

Protein Shakes and Exercise

How much or what type of protein shake you consume depends on how much exercise you get on very consistent, regular basis. If you are a mostly sedentary person and don’t exercise regularly, there is no conclusive evidence that increasing your protein intake primarily for weight loss purposes is effective. Some studies show that excess protein in your diet with no changes in lifestyle in terms of exercise and diet can cause you to gain weight, as that protein gets stored as fat.

Protein Shakes and Changes in Diet

Recent preliminary studies show that high protein diets help build muscle and burn fast faster, and in fact the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for protein may be too low. Americans should eat more protein. That doesn’t mean you should eat more animal protein, like red meat and eggs. You can get protein from plant sources as well, with nuts, legumes and seeds.

If you consume more protein while continuing to eat an excess of carbohydrates, you won’t lose weight. The key is increasing your protein intake while decreasing your carbohydrate intake.

Excess protein can dehydrate your body and stress your kidneys. Dr. Botros can discuss with you how to calculate how many grams of protein you should consume per day, based on your current body weight and your weight loss goals.

Protein Shakes and Meal Replacement

Often our patients will attempt to replace a meal with a protein shake. If the protein shake contains whey protein, you can end up being hungry again within a few hours. Casein protein does help you feel satisfied longer, but the best thing for making you feel full is fiber. Many protein shakes don’t contain fiber, as fiber can also cause bloating and water retention if you don’t consume enough water or are sweating excessively.

Consuming more protein is better for you, if you balance that with fewer carbohydrates. Any time you want to lose weight or change your diet you should consult with a nutrition specialist, preferably a physician specifically trained in weight loss management.

Knowing how much protein you should consume based on your diet and activity level, or in accordance with your weight loss goals is complicated and best left to the professionals. If you take matters into your own hands you might end up gaining weight from drinking the wrong kind of protein shakes or you could damage your kidneys or other vital organs from consuming too much protein and not enough fat.

It all comes down to a lifestyle change and having the support you need with a weight loss team! Dr. Botros offers a complimentary consultation and will development a custom weight loss plan based on a thorough analysis of your body type and health concerns.

Why Fall is the Perfect Time to Start Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Spring fashion starts hitting the stores in early February—smack dab in the dead of winter. Most of us flip through the bright, sun-soaked pages of Marie Claire while sitting in sweat pants, watching the snow blanket the world around us. Mini skirts for Spring 2017? We read. Then we think: I haven’t even seen my legs since September! Rather than be blindsided this year, we at PAW want to help you to start planning for spring or summer right now! Here is why fall is the perfect time to start laser hair treatments:

No Sun Exposure for Laser Hair Removal…

Fall brings shorter days, crisper weather, boots and jeans and less sun! With diode laser treatments, you have to stay OUT of the sun for two to three weeks after each treatment. Not only that, if you have a tan it’s best to wait four weeks from your last sun exposure to start laser treatments (explanation below). During the summer, staying out of the sun is a dismal and impossible prospect. In the fall, it’s not that big of deal, since you have those cute new boots and skinny jeans you’ve been dying to wear.

With Laser Hair Removal, Timing is everything…

You have to wait six weeks in between each treatment, on average. Most patients need six to eight treatments to be completely, totally smooth as a baby’s hairless little bottom. Let’s do the math:

6 weeks x 6 treatments = 36 weeks or the END OF APRIL, BEGINNING OF MAY IF YOU START NOW!

Or if you need eight treatments, that puts you right at the beginning of summer. Perfect timing.

The Inconvenience and Expense of a Lifetime of Shaving…

Shaving statistics

Let’s do some more fun math:

10.9 minutes shaving x 12 times shaving a month = 130.8 minutes per month. That’s a little over two hours a month you could save. What would you do with an extra 2 hours a month?

  • Start a cooking club?
  • Call your grandma every Sunday?
  • Volunteer at a local homeless shelter?
  • Walk your elderly neighbor’s dog once a week?

Some Educational Info about Diode Lasers v IPL for Hair Removal…

Some of you may have gotten laser hair removal treatments in the past, but the hair has grown back. You may have been treated with an IPL laser. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It works by delivering a scattered pulse of light to the pigment in the hair, destroying the follicle. The problem with IPL for hair removal is that it also destroys skin cells, if the cells have any pigment at all. That is why IPL only works for light skinned patients with dark hair. IPL also hurts, causing a pretty painful burning sensation to the skin, as well as redness and swelling post treatment.

IPL is a less expensive hair removal method than diode lasers and is often offered through coupon apps like Groupon. But, with IPL you also need more treatments, usually up to 12 to see results. AND, we just can’t emphasize enough here at PAW that spa treatments should be done by a licensed physician, as they are medical procedures!

Diode lasers, like the state-of-the-art Palomar Vectus laser, work by delivering one spectrum of energy directly to the hair follicle and not to the surrounding skin. A skilled, trained technician sets the wavelength on the laser according to your skin type, which can be anywhere from fair to dark skinned. Lasers with a cooling fan make the process completely painless and we rarely see swelling or redness.

With eight diode laser treatments we feel comfortable telling patient they will have permanent hair removal, not hair reduction as with IPL. It takes eight treatments because the laser only targets hair in the active growing stage, and unfortunately, our hair grows at different stages. So, to make sure we get every last pesky hair, it usually takes six to eight treatments.

A great resource for real patient reviews and information about beauty treatments including laser hair removal: When you read these reviews, please be discerning who was administering the treatment. Was it a medical doctor or a beautician with no medical training?

Here is the Laser Hair Removal Deal…

At PAW we offer a lifetime package deal, where patients pay for six treatments but receive eight. During the course of the patient’s lifetime, if any hair grows back at all, we only charge $25 a treatment. All of our laser treatments are done by a medical doctor extensively trained in using the diode laser.

We are running a fall laser hair removal BOGO special that you can take advantage of to be ready by spring or summer. Call us for a complimentary consultation and get started now!

Healthy Skin for Flawless Foundation

Before and After Medical Foundation
Lauren Oryall before and after applying Oxygenetix medical foundation makeup

It’s challenging to find a face foundation that doesn’t settle in after a few hours and end up highlighting your dry skin, wrinkles, large pores or acne sores. Even after using moisturizer, primer and carefully layering, you can encounter the same issues. The problem may not be your foundation makeup—it may be your skin. The cold, dry fall weather exacerbates the sun damage and hard water or chlorine damage from the summer months. Healthy skin is the best foundation for flawless makeup. Read below for spa tips to give you flawless foundation this fall.

Exfoliate to Remove Superficial Damage

You can remove the top dead layer of skin with gentle exfoliation at home. Look for products with glycolic acid, salicylic acid or lactic acid to gently and naturally slough off dead skin. Pharmaceutical grade products have a higher concentration of active ingredients. See a licensed dermatologist for an assessment beforehand, as he or she will determine a safe product for your skin type.

At home care can take several weeks to see any noticeable improvement. We recommend a spa chemical peel followed by a home exfoliation regime for best results. Chemical peels help reduce pores, stimulate collagen for anti-aging and remove flaws caused by sun damage. They range from moderate, with little or no downtime, to medium, or more aggressive with some downtime.

Once you’ve removed dead skin cells, you will see a noticeable difference in your foundation makeup.

Moisturizer for Healthy Skin

After exfoliation, it’s crucial that you follow up with a good quality moisturizer. Studies show that products containing L Ascorbic Acid, or vitamin C, applied topically, help repair the skin after sun damage. For daytime, use moisturizer with an SPF 30. Apply your moisturizer before your foundation and wait five minutes for it to settle in.

Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xanin) to Smoothen Wrinkles

As you age, your skin loses elasticity. Elasticity is your skin’s ability to smoothen out after it’s been crinkled. Think of elasticity like a rubber band, which cracks and dries out from age and frequent use.

Neuromodulators (most commonly called Botox, even though there are several specific brands of botulism toxins) are facial injections that cause the superficial muscles just under your skin to relax. When you smile, frown or laugh your skin won’t wrinkle as deeply. Over time, the superficial wrinkles on your face lessen or even disappear, which helps your makeup foundation to go on smoothly and flawlessly.

Medical Makeup Face Foundation

When most people think of medical makeup foundation, they think thick, pancake makeup. Nobody wants to look like Swedish vlogger Josefin Lillakas after applying 100 layers of foundation!

We at PAW agree that medical makeup foundation, in the past, was heavy and unnatural looking, but with the advances in the beauty industry in the last few years, it’s time to start some positive PR for medical face foundation. Anyone can use it, even if you don’t need the extra coverage it provides. Not every brand works for everyone, but several products on the market offer full, natural looking with anti-aging and healing properties that stimulate collagen growth, contain SPF to protect your skin and have soothing ingredients that can heal sunburns or acne lesions. Lauren Oryall, Office Coordinator for PAW, says, “Some of our patients are surprised to hear that I wear Oxygenetix everyday, since it it marketed as a post procedure foundation. Oxygenetix gives me a natural, finished look without putting anything heavy on my face. The added SPF just saves me a step when I’m in a hurry.” Check out Lauren’s before and after picture at the beginning of the blog!

If you’re in the area, please stop by Plaza Aesthetics & Wellness try a complimentary application of Oxygenetix at our makeup station. We would love to chat with you about at-home or in-spa skincare as well as answer any questions you have about flawless foundation for fall!
